Online Classes

Online Classes

Online classes are available for students who need to take courses outside the traditional classroom setting.

Please be aware that when choosing this option, it is entirely the parent’s and student’s responsibility to register for the course, complete all assigned work, and ensure the class is finished on time. This process functions much like homeschooling, meaning it is self-managed and independent from the school’s direct oversight.

For Brighton High School, classes in person are .50 credits per class. In order to get the same amount of credit, you will need to take two .25 classes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What online Providers do you recommend? Canyons Virtual Academy (https://cva.canyonsdistrict.org/) is the online program through Canyons School District. For other options, please look through the State-Wide Online Education Program (SOEP) website (https://schools.utah.gov/soep/index). All Online providers should be accredited institutions to count as credit for graduation.
  • What classes should my student take? Please refer to your students’ graduation requirements on Skyward to ensure they have completed the required credits. You will need 2 Quarters of classes to equal 1 trimester of work. A = Q1 & Q2  B = Q3 & Q4.
  • Who is tracking my child’s progress online? Many online programs are asynchronous, meaning self-paced. The student and parents are solely responsible for ensuring the student’s completion of the course and receiving a passing grade. All questions about coursework should be directed to the chosen provider. Canyons Virtual offers parent observer accounts to help parents track their students’ progress.
  • What happens if my child does not complete the course? For each quarter the student does not complete the work, they become more deficient towards graduation. You will need to check with the provider to determine the consequences of failing or not completing a course.
  • What if I’m replacing a grade in a previous class? To replace a previous class, the new class must be an original credit class. You must also fill out the grade replacement form. Credit Recovery classes can not count for grade replacement. Parents and students are responsible for ensuring they are registered appropriately.
