Announcements:

  • The counseling center at Brighton has gone through a few changes in the past few weeks. We lost a counselor, Tucker Reynolds, to another school district, and have replaced him with a long term substitute. Because of this change, we are shifting the alphabets a bit. The new counselor for students with the last name: Net-Sme will be Megan Lyman. Those students with the last name Gre-Kh the new counselor will be Suzanne Oakeson. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we adjust to the change.
  • Mark your calendars for Parent- Teacher Conferences. They will be held on WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 5, 2022 Virtual appointments may be made from 3:00 – 7:00.  In person appointments may be made from 7:00 – 8:30. Please note that teachers will block out time for their dinner. A special thank you to the PTA for providing dinner.
  • Brighton’s Girls Volleyball team is having their annual PInk Night Game on Tuesday, October 11th when they play Murray High School. PInk NIght is a chance for the team to raise awareness of breast cancer and to help support local groups that work with breast cancer research or patients. This year, the team will be supporting the Image Reborn Foundation, which has a mission to provide no-cost healing retreats to women diagnosed with breast cancer and to assist them in living rich and fulfilling lives. To raise funds to support the foundation, the team will be asking for admission donations at the game, hosting a raffle drawing, and donating all concession sales that evening. They are also happy to facilitate any local business or individual donations. Please come support the Lady Bengals in this effort. The Sophomore game kicks off at 3:30 p.m, followed by JV and Freshman at 5 p.m., and Varsity at 6:30 p.m.
  • FAFSA Help Night is October 12. Seniors and parents/guardians of seniors, Brighton High School is hosting a FAFSA Completion Open House for you to get expert help completing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Please join us on Wednesday, October 12 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Students will be eligible to apply for a FAFSA Open House Scholarship drawing. We’d love to see you there!
  • Utah College Application Week is October 10-14. During this week, Brighton seniors will use FLEX time to work on their college applications. Brighton counselors and College admissions representatives will be able to help students and answer questions. Students should report directly to the room featuring the college they want to apply to during FLEX. Attendance will be taken. Students are encouraged to attend multiple sessions throughout the week.   • The Math Department is holding math lab on Tuesdays in Michelle O’Reilly’s room #2414 and on Thursdays in Troy Clarke’s room #2410 from 2:30pm – 3:30pm.
  • PSAT/NMQST test will be administered at Brighton High School on Wednesday October 12 or Tuesday October 25.   It will begin at 7:30 a.m. in room 3600.  Students must pay a $22 testing fee and fill out a testing form in the Main Office by September 16, 2022.
  • 1st Tri AP students must pay their $100.00 fee in the Main Office of Brighton High School by October 7, 2022.  A Standard fee of $140 for Capstone (Research or Seminar) . Reduced fee $55    Additional late fee of $40 starting October 8, 2022.  1st Tri AP students must also register online at myap.collegeboard.org by October 7, 2022.  Join code is needed. Please speak to your AP or Capstone teacher for additional information, if needed.
    • Career Exploration Opportunities!   Throughout the school year, opportunities to participate in a job shadow and/or company tour will become available.  Please sign up for a chance to attend by clicking on the link below.  Be sure to indicate the pathway(s) you are most interested in learning about.   Transportation to the business (in most cases) will be the responsibility of the student.  Spots are limited and are on a first come basis.  For more info contact eileen.kasteler@canyonsdistrict.org   https://cnyns.org/3UJwYFj

    SCHOLARSHIP INTERVIEWS at Brighton High School    Room 1513   Sign up for an appointment at the following link: Senior Scholarship Information:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0448ACAB22ABF49-scholarship 2023 Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship The Elks National Foundation awards $2.44 million in college scholarships to a total of 500 high school seniors nationwide through its Most Valuable Student contest.  Eligibility is a high school senior and US Citizen.  Applications available online at enf.elks.org/MVS     Due on or before November 14, 2022.  Counselor Report due November 21, 2022. Also, the Park City Elks Lodge along with the Utah Elks Association, is participating in our Student Scholarship Program for 2022-2023.  This program is open to all high school seniors planning on a technical or vocational education or students with special needs.  Scholarship applications are available in room 1513.  Student Scholarship Program applications should be scanned and sent to:  parkcity734@gmail.com    Applications are due by January 31, 2023. OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP – CLASS OF 2023 Students must apply for the Opportunity Scholarship during their senior year of high school. All 2023 high school graduates may qualify for the scholarship by meeting the advanced course requirements. Read this 2023 Application FAQ document for more information. The 2023 high school graduate application will open November 15, 2022.
    • The priority deadline is December 2, 2022.
    • The final deadline is February 1, 2023.
    • All students are encouraged to meet the priority deadline.
    2024 graduates (and beyond) should check this website regularly for updates. Any updates from the legislative session are posted each spring. These requirements were created after examining data from recent Utah high school graduates to identify the top predictors of college success.
    • Earn a 3.3 cumulative high school GPA
    • Complete 3 advanced courses (see next question for more details about eligible courses)
      • Complete 1 Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or Concurrent Enrollment (CE) course in each of the core areas of high school graduation:
        • math,
        • science, and
        • language arts
    • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
    • Graduate from a Utah high school
    Students earn core credit by completing the following courses in each subject area, based on Utah State Board of Education (USBE) standards. Students will need to work with their high school to find out which courses are available at their school. Eligible courses are any Concurrent Enrollment (CE), Advanced Placement (AP), or International Baccalaureate (IB) course that aligns to a USBE core code starting with “06” (Language Arts), “07” (Mathematics), and “08” Science. We recommend using the Concurrent Enrollment Master List (core code listed) to find acceptable CE courses. Courses that align with other subject areas will not be accepted. Students may earn credit through Early College courses completed in grades 9-12 that are included on the CE Master List as described above. This list is not comprehensive.     The Opportunity Scholarship can be used at Salt Lake Community College, Snow College, Southern Utah University, Utah State University, Utah Tech University (formerly Dixie State University), Utah Valley University, University of Utah, Weber State University and the following private, non-profit institutions in Utah: Brigham Young University (Provo), Ensign College, Westminster College, and Western Governors University. Students may defer use of the scholarship to attend a technical college that is part of the Utah System of Higher Education and then transfer to an eligible institution listed above. Please contact the scholarship office if you have questions about this process. Deferment of the Opportunity Scholarship may also be granted for students who plan to provide a religious, humanitarian, or military service, face medical reasons that inhibit their ability to attend school, or other reasons approved by an eligible institution. Scholarship recipients must coordinate any deferment with individual institutions before departure.
