Digital Citizenship Week

Canyons School District

Digital Citizenship Week Overview

2024-2025

Digital Citizenship Week in CSD

October 14-16, 2024, Canyons School District will be participating in our annual Digital Citizenship Week. From cyberbullying and photo sharing to digital footprints and online safety, we want to help students and families address important topics and have meaningful conversations about making great choices in their digital lives. As a Common Sense certified school district, Canyons is committed to teaching digital citizenship to young people and engaging the entire community in this important discussion. Students engage in Digital Citizenship lessons throughout the year.

For the week of Digital Citizenship in October, we want to make this a time of celebration, awareness of the importance of digital citizenship, and a reinforcement of the skills they are learning throughout the year. Your student may participate in a trivia game or other fun activities to help remind and reinforce the value of using technology for good. Please take time to ask your student about what they are learning and the fun activities they are participating in. Some of the topics that they are learning about are:

“What is AI?”
Students will explore how AI works and consider some of its potential benefits and drawbacks.

“Who are you on Social Media”

Students will understand social media is a way for them to present themselves to the world and how they can present the self that they aim to be.

“Filter Bubble Trouble”

Students will define what a “filter bubble” is and explain how it occurs. They will then reflect on the limitations that filter bubbles cause and strategies for escaping their own filter bubbles.

“Connecting with Digital Audiences”

Students will learn that the method they communicate with someone (online vs. in person) affects how they communicate and how to communicate positively in the digital world.

“How AI Bias Impacts Our Lives”

Students will understand how artificial intelligence (AI) tools can make mistakes, create and reinforce stereotypes, and what impact that can have.

“The Big Data Dilemma”

Students will explore the benefits and drawbacks of online tracking, so they can make smart decisions about online privacy.

“Social Media and How You Feel”

Students will identify how using social media makes them feel. They will then discuss active and passive media use and how being digital media creators can help with their social and emotional well-being.
